Sex with the Lights On

by Ducky Doolittle

In her interview here on ErosZine, Ducky Doolittle talked about her experiences as a sex worker: peepshow girl, a stripper, a fetish model and smut writer. She’s sat in pies and engaged in clown sex, performed stand-up and given erotic readings, and traveled the country sharing her stories. This babe has seen it all. So it’s no surprise that she finally landed a book contract to tell her tales and impart her hard-won wisdom. The result is her incandescent Sex with the Lights On: 200 Illuminating Sex Questions Answered.

The book is based on the many sex questions Ducky has fielded over the years. In fact, every time she’d appear live, she’d invite her audience to fill out index cards with their questions, so they’d be anonymous. Surprisingly, she managed to hold on to those hundreds of cards! Her introduction sets the tone: conversational and casual, as though you were chatting with a friend. She basically explains how it is she has arrived at a place where people are asking her such things.

She starts with the basics: graphic illustrations of genitalia—in other words, a map of the area. She quickly veers off into the topics people really want to know about: female ejaculation, the G spot and whether one should shave or wax. It isn’t just about the ladies, though. She answers questions like “What is the best way to handle a guy who is having a difficult time getting it up?” and “Can you explain how I can use my hands on his balls?” Every few pages there are thought-provoking homework assignments to make you more sexually aware, quotes from the author about her sex life and interesting factoids and myths.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this book is that it’s written in a way that doesn’t specify any particular sexual preference, so the information inside can be used by everyone—gay, straight or bi. Ducky delves into anal play, sex toys, condoms and dental dams, penis pumps, sex for the handicapped and more. She covers sexual health and how to play safely. And she devotes an entire chapter to body image, which, truth be told, is one of the most important components to a satisfying sex life.

Finally, her bibliography, resources and web site listings are a what’s what to the wonderful world of kink. This all adds up to a witty, concise and completely approachable book that would be perfect for anyone curious and full of questions. It’s the book you wish you’d had in junior high, when they were showing those embarrassing movies instead. A bright book from a bright young woman.
